Kathleen Smith started her career as a claims adjuster investigating, negotiating and settling claims for third parties. That foundation lead to the development of her extensive experience investigating liability and coverage issues, negotiating settlements, drafting pleadings, and serving and responding to discovery, mediation, depositions and trial.
Ms. Smith moved into the health care arena in early 2000, representing hospitals as well as patients, then worked for the Public Defender’s Office in Fredericksburg where she covered arraignments, bond hearings, discovery motions, investigations and trials. Over the past 20+ years, Ms. Smith has worked in litigation managing many hundreds of cases in the fields of personal injury, premises liability, and wrongful death. In addition to handling her own case load, Ms. Smith mentored inexperienced attorneys in all aspects of litigation, including filing motion in judgements, trials in General District Court, negotiating with adjusters, filing complaints, discovery, designating experts, and trying cases in circuit court.
Outside of the office, Ms. Smith spends her time gardening, playing cards or enjoying the beach with her husband, Dennis, their two beautiful Great Danes, Merlin and Guinevere, and a cat named Grendel.
