ANNAPOLIS, MD (2012) Setliff Law, P.C. is pleased to announce that one of its partners and an associate have been selected as among the best in the state by Maryland Super Lawyers. Partner Stephen B. Caplis was selected for inclusion in the 2013 edition of Maryland Super Lawyers and associate Cheryl L. Hitzel was selected as a 2013 Rising Star. Fewer than five percent of all lawyers in the state are awarded a place on the Super Lawyers list.
Each year, Super Lawyers magazine publishes a list of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a rigorous, multiphase rating process. Peer nominations and evaluations are combined with third party research. Each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made on an annual, state-by-state basis. The Rising Star designation follows the same rigorous standards, but candidates are 40 years of age or younger, or have been practicing for 10 years or less.
Mr. Caplis has been repeatedly recognized on the Maryland Super Lawyers list (2009 – 2013). He was named in the 2010 edition of Baltimore’s Best Lawyers, a supplement to the Baltimore Sun that recognizes the best lawyers in Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C. He has also been recognized by Best Lawyers in America (2008 - 2013) in the category of Railroad Law. Mr. Caplis has extensive experience in transportation law, tort liability, personal injury, general litigation, and federal and state appellate practice. He is past Vice President of the Eastern region of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel (NARTC), former chair of the NARTC’s jury instruction committee, and a past member of its executive committee.
Ms. Hitzel joined Setliff Law as an associate in 2010. In addition to Maryland, Ms. Hitzel is licensed to practice in New York, where she served the eleven Honorable Justices of the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division as Appellate Court Attorney, advisor to the Court. Ms. Hitzel’s areas of specialty include transportation law, criminal law, construction law, premises liability, and general litigation. She is also a graduate of the NARTC Railroad Trial College.
